A gang of three men who fraudulently hired a car to prowl Birmingham streets for a victim have been jailed for more than 20 years.
Arjan Purewal used fake identification to hire a BMW specifically to go hunting for a woman to attack.
The 23-year-old was joined by Jaskaran Thandi and Hassan Jangheer, both also 23, as they drove up and down Broad Street in Birmingham during the early hours of Saturday, September 16, 2023.
They picked up a female student and drove her roughly 30 minutes away to Vine Lane in Clent before launching a brutal attack.
Filmed attack carried out in Clent
Purewal orally raped the woman, while Jangheer forced her to perform a sexual act on him.
Thandi then sexually assaulted her, as Purewal recorded the horrific ordeal on his mobile phone.
The survivor told authorities that she was left dumped in the middle of nowhere following the attack. Police were called to the scene at around 3.30am.
The behaviour of the perpetrators was appalling, and it is right that they are now behind bars.
Detective Inspector Warren Matthews, West Mercia Police
A spokesperson for West Mercia Police confirmed that the survivor has received appropriate help and support following the incident.
Detective Inspector Warren Matthews spoke out following the sentencing.
Their vile and predatory actions caused significant harm to the survivor, but we hope the sentencing helps on her path to recovery. I also hope this outcome provides reassurance to victims and survivors that when they come forward, they will be heard.
Strict sentences delivered at Crown Court
Purewal, of Wolverhampton Road, Oldbury, was convicted of rape, blackmail, perverting the course of justice, and possession of an identification document with improper intention following a trial in March 2025.
At Worcester Crown Court on Friday, October 9, Purewal was handed seven years and six months for rape, a concurrent one-year term for blackmail, one year consecutively for perverting the course of justice, and eight months concurrently for the false document charge, making a total sentence of eight years and six months.
Further charges of conspiracy to rape a female and sexual assault on a female were ordered to lie on file against Purewal, who must also sign the sex offenders register for life.
Thandi, of HMP Hewell, Redditch, was given six years and four months for aiding and abetting rape, alongside a two-year concurrent sentence for sexual assault.
All three men were ordered to pay victim surcharges of £228 after receiving prison terms totaling more than 20 years.
